Quick answers with 2026-27 figures, each linking to the page that covers the topic properly.

PAYG basics

What is PAYG?
Pay As You Go, the ATO's system for collecting income tax across the year. Employers withhold from wages (PAYG withholding) and businesses prepay quarterly (PAYG instalments). Full explanation in what is PAYG.
How much tax comes out of my pay?
It depends on income, pay cycle and residency. On $80,000 a year a resident pays about $16,120 in 2026-27, an effective rate of 20.2%. Get your exact figure with the PAYG calculator.
How is the withheld amount worked out?
From the ATO's withholding schedules, which convert the annual 2026-27 tax brackets into per-pay amounts. The maths is in how PAYG is calculated.

Thresholds and levies

Should I claim the tax-free threshold?
Yes, with your main employer, and only one employer at a time. The decision rules and second-job consequences are in the tax-free threshold guide.
What is the Medicare levy?
2% of taxable income for most residents, with a low-income phase-in and a separate surcharge for higher earners without private hospital cover. See the Medicare levy guide or the calculator.
How do HECS repayments work in 2026-27?
Nothing below $69,528 of repayment income, then 15c per dollar to $129,717 and 17c above, switching to 10% of total income at high incomes. Rates in the HECS rates guide, your figure in the HECS calculator.

Instalments and business

Why did I get a PAYG instalment notice?
Your last return showed $4,000 or more of business or investment income and a tax bill over $1,000, so the ATO enrolled you automatically. Details in why you got an instalment notice.
Can I reduce a quarterly instalment?
Yes, by varying it on the activity statement before the due date with a genuine estimate. Steps and the 85% rule are in varying PAYG instalments.
How much tax does a sole trader pay?
The same individual rates as an employee on the same income; there is no separate ABN rate. Run your profit through the sole trader tax calculator.
