Interesting facts
  • The weekly schedule annualises each pay: your week is multiplied by 52, taxed as a full year, then divided back into a weekly amount.
  • A financial year occasionally fits 53 weekly paydays instead of 52. The schedules assume 52, so the extra pay can leave a small shortfall at tax time.

How weekly withholding is annualised

The ATO's weekly schedule does not tax your week in isolation. It takes your weekly earnings (ignoring cents), multiplies them by 52, works out a full year of income tax on that figure using the 2026-27 tax brackets, adds the Medicare levy, then divides the result back by 52 and rounds to the dollar. Your payslip shows that one-week slice of a pretend full year.

The annualising step is why irregular pay behaves strangely. Work a week of overtime and the schedule assumes every week looks like that, so it withholds at a higher rate than your real annual income justifies. The reverse applies to a short week. Nothing is lost either way, because your actual tax is settled at your return. The full mechanics, offsets included, are in how PAYG is calculated.

$1,500 a week, with and without the tax-free threshold

The single biggest lever on weekly withholding is whether you claim the tax-free threshold. Claim it on your main job only. Here is the same $1,500 week both ways under 2026-27 scales:

Threshold claimed
$298
withheld each week
Threshold not claimed
$350
withheld each week
Difference
$53
extra withheld per week

Payroll people and anyone checking a payslip often want the schedule amounts rather than a calculator. Our weekly tax table lists the 2026-27 withholding for weekly wages from $500 to $3,000, with columns for both the threshold-claimed and no-threshold scales, all computed from the same engine as this page.

Paid every two weeks instead? Withholding is calculated per pay event, so the numbers differ slightly from doubling a week. The fortnightly tax calculator handles that cycle properly, including the 27-pay-year quirk.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay weekly?
Under the 2026-27 scales, a resident claiming the tax-free threshold with no HELP debt pays about $133 on $1,000 a week, $298 on $1,500 and $458 on $2,000. Enter your exact wage in the calculator above for your own figure.
How much tax will I pay this week if my pay is higher than usual?
More than the extra hours alone suggest. The schedule taxes each week as if you earned that amount all year, so a one-off big week is withheld at an annualised level you never actually reach. The excess comes back as a refund after you lodge your return.
What do I take home on $1,500 a week?
$1,202 a week for a resident claiming the tax-free threshold, after $298 in tax and Medicare levy. That is $62,520 across the year on a $78,000 wage.
Why is my payslip a few dollars different from this calculator?
The ATO schedules ignore cents, round each pay to whole dollars and calculate per pay event. This calculator divides the exact annual liability by 52, so small differences of a few dollars per week are normal. They wash out at your tax return.
What happens when a year has 53 weekly pays?
Some financial years fit 53 paydays instead of 52. The ATO weekly table assumes 52, so the extra pay can leave you short at tax time. If that bothers you, the ATO lets you ask your employer to withhold an extra $3 a week on earnings of $875 to $2,574, $7 from $2,575 to $3,649, or $12 above that.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold on my weekly pay?
Yes, on your main job. On $1,500 a week, not claiming it adds $53 to the tax withheld every week. The full rules, including what to do across two jobs, are in our tax-free threshold guide.
Does this weekly tax calculator include Medicare and HELP?
The Medicare levy of 2% is included for residents automatically. HELP repayments are added when you tick the HELP option: for 2026-27 they start once annual income passes $69,528, which is about $1,337 a week.
