Interesting facts
  • Monthly pay is annualised for withholding: your month is multiplied by 12, taxed as a full year, then divided back into one pay.
  • A month averages 4.33 weeks, so a monthly payslip always looks bigger than four weekly ones. Annual totals are what match.

How monthly withholding works

Withholding on a monthly salary follows the same annualise-and-divide logic as every other cycle. Your monthly pay is multiplied by 12, a full year of income tax is calculated on that figure using the 2026-27 tax brackets, the 2% Medicare levy is added, and the total is divided back into one month. Twelve equal pays, one twelfth of the annual liability each.

The practical difference from weekly pay is smoothness. A salaried month rarely moves, so monthly withholding tracks the true annual tax closely and refunds tend to be small. Bonuses and one-off payments are the exception, since they spike a single pay. The underlying formula, offsets and all, is walked through in how PAYG is calculated.

Paid every two weeks rather than monthly? The fortnightly tax calculator is the right view, and it covers the 27-pay-year wrinkle monthly earners never see.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on $7,000 a month?
About $1,450 for a resident claiming the tax-free threshold with no HELP debt, which leaves $5,550 in take-home pay. That salary annualises to $84,000 under the 2026-27 scales.
How much tax on $5,000 or $10,000 a month?
On the same 2026-27 settings, $5,000 a month withholds about $802 and $10,000 withholds about $2,410. Enter your exact salary above for your own figure.
Why is monthly withholding not simply my weekly tax times four?
Because a month is longer than four weeks. Twelve monthly pays cover the same year as 52 weekly pays, so each month carries about 4.33 weeks of income and tax. Comparing payslips across cycles only works on annual totals.
Do I pay the same annual tax as someone paid fortnightly?
Yes. Pay frequency never changes the tax on a given salary. Each schedule rounds its own way, so per-pay amounts differ by a few dollars across the year, and the difference washes out at your assessment.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold on my monthly salary?
On your main job, yes. Without it the whole salary sits on the no-threshold scale and tax is withheld from the first dollar. See our tax-free threshold guide for the rules across two employers.
Is superannuation included in these figures?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of salary and never touches take-home pay. On $84,000 a year that is another $10,080 going into your fund.
