Against inflation

A 5.0% rise beats the 4.0% CPI rise for the 12 months to August 2026, a real gain of 1.0% before tax.

How much of a pay rise do I keep?

It depends on where your salary sits. On $80,000, a 5% rise is $4,000 before tax and $2,720 after it, or $105 a fortnight. Here is what you keep of each extra dollar at other salaries in 2026-27, without HELP.

Lower salaries can keep less than you would expect, because the low income tax offset and the Medicare levy phase in or out over the same range as the rise.

Pay rise percentage: how to work it out

(New salary - old salary) / old salary x 100. Going from $80,000 to $84,000 is a 5% payrise. To go the other way, multiply the old salary by 1 plus the percentage: $80,000 x 1.05 = $84,000. A salary increment on a pay scale works the same way.

Does a pay rise push me into a higher tax bracket?

Only the part above the threshold. Crossing into the 37% bracket at $135,000 does not change the tax on the first $135,000: a rise to $140,000 keeps $3,050 of the $5,000. The 2026-27 tax brackets list every threshold.

Has my pay kept up with inflation?

The ABS reported consumer prices up 4.0% in the 12 months to August 2026, released 30 September 2026. A rise smaller than that buys less than last year's pay did. On $80,000, keeping pace needs about $83,200. A 5% rise is a real gain of 1.0% before tax. The calculator compares your own rise with the same figure.

Pay rises and HECS repayments

Once your income passes the $69,528 repayment threshold for 2026-27, HELP takes a share of each extra dollar too. With a HELP debt, the $80,000 to $84,000 rise keeps $2,120 instead of $2,720. The HECS repayment calculator shows the full repayment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a pay rise percentage?
Divide the increase by your old salary and multiply by 100. $80,000 to $84,000 is $4,000 / $80,000 = 5%.
Will a pay rise push all my income into a higher tax bracket?
No. Only the dollars above a bracket threshold are taxed at the higher rate. A rise from $135,000 to $140,000 keeps $3,050 of the $5,000.
Does a pay rise increase my super?
Yes. Your employer pays the 12% super guarantee on what you earn, so super rises in step with the salary.
What is a salary increment?
Another name for a pay rise, often a scheduled step up a pay scale. The calculator works the same way: enter the new salary or the percentage.
