Tax is what your employer withholds from a weekly pay under the ATO's 2026-27 Schedule 1 tables. Super is 12% of the ordinary-hours pay; overtime is not counted.

Rates are the Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide for MA000003, published 24 June 2026, in force from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026. For the full rate tables by level and age, see Fast Food Award pay rates.

Which rate each hour gets under the Fast Food Award

Each hour is paid at one rate, set as a percentage of the minimum hourly rate for your level. Penalties are not added together: Fair Work's guidance is that an employee usually gets one penalty rate at a time, so put each hour in the one row that applies. Penalty percentages come from clause 21 Table 6 and overtime from clause 20.6 Table 5. Casual percentages already include the 25% casual loading (clause 11.2(b)).

Late night hours are ordinary time, not overtime. The award sets no span of ordinary hours (clause 13), so a rostered shift between 10pm and 6am is paid at 110% or 115% as long as it sits inside the 38-hour average and the 11-hour daily cap (clause 13.5). There is no evening rate before 10pm. A Level 1 casual earns $34.76 an hour at 9pm and $37.54 at 11pm.

Fast food pay for a week: six worked examples

These weeks run through the same engine as the calculator, with 2026-27 rates and the ATO's weekly withholding. The last column is for a second job, where you do not claim the tax-free threshold.

Why Level 1 gets the Saturday rate on a Sunday

A Level 1 fast food employee is paid 125% on a Sunday (150% casual), the same as Saturday, so a Level 1 casual earns $41.72 an hour on both days. Levels 2 and 3 get 150% and 175%: $51.54 an hour for a Level 2 casual. Clause 21 Table 6 prints the two Sunday rows separately. On 8 hours Saturday and 8 hours Sunday, a Level 2 casual earns $98.24 more than a Level 1 casual.

How overtime works under the Fast Food Award

You enter overtime hours yourself, because which hours count depends on your roster. Under clause 20:

  • Full-time: hours past 38 a week (or the roster average), past 11 ordinary hours in a day, or before your rostered start and after your rostered finish (20.2).
  • Part-time: the same, plus any hour past the agreed hours in your written agreement (20.3).
  • Casual: hours past 38 ordinary hours a week (or the roster average), or past 11 ordinary hours in a day (20.4).

Monday to Saturday overtime is worked out with each day standing alone (20.6(b)), so the first 2 hours at 150% start again every day. Casual overtime carries the loading: Table 5 NOTE 1 says the casual rates were calculated by adding the casual loading, which is why a Level 1 casual earns $48.67 for the first 2 hours against $41.72 full-time. Sunday overtime that is not joined to ordinary hours is paid for at least 4 hours (20.5).

A full-time Level 3 employee in charge of 2 or more people who works 38 hours plus 3 hours of overtime on one day earns $1,301.62: $30.27 for 38 hours, $45.41 for 2 hours and $60.54 for the third. The overtime pay calculator covers overtime under other awards.

Junior rates, and the 1 December 2026 increase

Employees under 21 are paid a percentage of the adult rate for their level, at every level (clause 15.2 Table 4). Penalty and overtime rates are the same percentages of the junior hourly rate, so a junior Level 1 still gets the Saturday rate on a Sunday.

From the first full pay period starting on or after 1 December 2026, juniors aged 18, 19 and 20 who have worked for their employer for more than 6 months move to 75%, 85%, 95% of the adult rate (Fair Work Commission determination PR813654, 26 August 2026). A 20-year-old Level 1 casual with more than 6 months' service goes from $31.29 to $33.03 an hour. Choose the pay period in the calculator to see either rate.

More steps follow each 1 July and 1 December until 1 Jul 2029, when 18-year-olds with more than 6 months reach the adult rate. Those later steps arrive with new adult rates, so this calculator covers 2026-27 only. The FWO pay guide also notes that trade qualified juniors must be paid the appropriate adult rate.

Tax on fast food award pay

Your employer withholds tax from award pay with the ATO's 2026-27 Schedule 1 tables, the same as any wage. There is no separate scale for casuals. The $667.52 weekend week above has $59 withheld if you claim the tax-free threshold from this job, and $141 if you do not, which is usual on a second job. A HELP or other study debt adds an amount under Schedule 8 once your pay passes the repayment threshold.

To turn a full year of these weeks into an annual figure, run the gross through the PAYG calculator, or use the take-home pay calculator for weekly, fortnightly and yearly take-home side by side. For casual work under other awards, the casual pay calculator shows how the 25% loading and penalties combine.

What the calculator leaves out

  • Minimum shifts. A casual is paid for at least 3 consecutive hours a day (clause 11.3), and a part-timer must be rostered for at least 3 consecutive hours a shift (clause 10.2). Enter 3 hours for a shorter casual shift.
  • Breaks. Paid rest breaks count as time worked and unpaid meal breaks do not (clause 14.1 Table 2), so count the first and leave the second out.
  • Time off instead of overtime pay, which the award allows by agreement (clause 20.7).
  • Enterprise agreements and above-award pay. If an agreement or contract covers you, check its rates. The award is the minimum.
  • Allowances, listed below with their 2026-27 amounts.

Yes, for juniors aged 18, 19 and 20 who have worked for their employer for more than 6 months. From the first full pay period starting on or after 1 December 2026 they move to 75%, 85%, 95% of the adult rate. A 20-year-old Level 1 casual goes from $31.29 to $33.03 an hour.
What is the shortest shift a casual can be paid for?
Three hours. Clause 11.3 of the Fast Food Award sets the minimum daily engagement for a casual at 3 consecutive hours, and part-time employees must be rostered for at least 3 consecutive hours a shift (clause 10.2).
