Key takeaways
- Pre-fill is available now. The ATO has over 100 million records loaded from employers, banks, health insurers, share registries and government agencies.
- People who lodged before pre-fill were more than twice as likely to have their return amended.
- ATO data matching adjusted more than 595,000 individual returns in 2024-25, and the ATO corrected another 140,000 for discrepancies.
- Most returns are processed within 12 business days. Calling the ATO does not speed that up.
- Self-lodgers have until 31 October. If you want a tax agent, be on their books by 31 October too.
- The new $1,000 standard deduction does not apply this year. It starts at Tax Time 2027.
Pre-fill is live, so the waiting game is over
ATO Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen said on 27 July that most income statements and pre-fill information is now available, and taxpayers with straightforward affairs can review and lodge. The data comes from employers, banks, private health insurers, share registries and government agencies, and it lands in myTax automatically.
The practical instruction is unchanged: check it rather than trust it. Pre-fill covers what third parties reported, not what you know. Cash income, side hustles and deductions are still yours to add, and lodging is a legal declaration that the return is true and correct.
What the early lodgers got wrong
The ATO put numbers on this in June, and they are worth reading before anyone rushes. During 2024-25, taxpayers who lodged before pre-fill was ready were more than twice as likely to have their returns amended. The ATO corrected more than 140,000 returns where employment income, interest, dividends, welfare payments, Medicare levy exemptions or private health details did not match. Its data matching program adjusted more than 595,000 returns in total for missing income, overstated deductions and credit discrepancies.
Challen named it directly: many taxpayers assume lodging first means refunding first. It often means the opposite, because a return with missing information gets held, queried or amended. If you already lodged in early July and have spotted a gap, the fix is an amendment rather than waiting to be caught.
Your refund depends on withholding, not on lodging early
A refund is not a bonus for filing. It is the gap between what your employer withheld across the year and what you actually owed. On a $85,000 salary in 2026-27, a resident owes about $17,720 in income tax and Medicare levy for the full year. If payroll withheld more than that, the difference comes back. If it withheld less, you get a bill, and lodging in July rather than October changes none of it.
That is why the useful preparation is knowing your own numbers before you open myTax. The tax refund calculator reconciles tax withheld against tax owed, and why is my tax refund so low explains what a small refund actually signals.
The dates that matter now
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 27 July 2026 | ATO confirms pre-fill available, lodgement encouraged |
| Late August 2026 | Contractor income via TPAR starts appearing in pre-fill |
| 31 October 2026 | Self-lodgement deadline, and the date to be on a tax agent's books |
Processing is quick once lodged. The ATO says most returns are finished within 12 business days, and that phoning them does not accelerate anything. Timings, delays and how to track progress are covered in how long a tax refund takes.
New this year for contractors
The ATO is expanding pre-fill to include income reported through the Taxable Payments Annual Report. Contractors in building and construction, cleaning, courier services, information technology, road freight and security may see that income appear automatically from late August. If you work in those industries, that is a reason to wait rather than lodge in early August.
Contractors paid without withholding usually meet the tax system through PAYG instalments instead of payday withholding, and the sole trader tax calculator works out the annual position on business profit.
